The Five Steps
- Start a game. Press Start game under the board. Three pieces appear in the tray and the 8 by 8 board is empty.
- Drag a piece onto the board. Hold a piece and move it over the board. A yellow shadow shows where it will land; let go to drop it there.
- Fill a row or a column. When every cell of a row or a column is filled, that line clears and scores. Lines that will clear glow while you aim.
- Chain clears for more points. Clear lines on drop after drop to build a chain: the line points are multiplied by the chain, up to eight times.
- Use a refresh when stuck. If no piece fits, spend a refresh to swap the tray. Ten cleared lines fill the Purn meter and give you another refresh.
That is all there is to Purn Win Game. Nothing is timed, so take as long as you like over each drop. The game saves after every move: close the tab and the board is waiting for you next time, with a Continue button.
Three Ways to Move a Piece
| Device | How |
|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | Drag the piece. It floats a little above your finger so the landing cells stay visible. |
| Phone, one tap at a time | Tap a piece to pick it up, then tap the cell where its middle should go. |
| Keyboard | Press 1, 2 or 3 to pick a piece, move it with the arrow keys, press Enter to drop, Esc to put it back. |
Pieces cannot be rotated or flipped. The shape you see is the shape you place, which is what makes planning ahead matter.
How Points Are Counted

- 1 point per block you place. A single block is 1, the big square is 9.
- Line points: one line is 10, two at once 30, three 60, four 100, five 150. Several lines in one drop always beat the same lines one by one.
- Chain: line points are multiplied by how many drops in a row have cleared something (x2, x3 … up to x8). A drop that clears nothing ends the chain.
- Purn Board: clear the last blocks so the whole board is empty and you get 300 extra points.
Example: you have a chain of x3 going and your next drop finishes two lines. That drop scores its blocks plus 30 x 3 = 90 line points. If those two lines were the only blocks left, add 300 for the Purn Board.
The Purn Meter and Refreshes
The ten small bars above the board are the Purn meter. Each cleared line lights one bar. When all ten are lit they turn into a refresh, and the meter starts again. A refresh swaps every piece still in your tray for three new ones. You begin with one, you can hold three, and the button shows how many you have. Keep at least one for the moment the board gets tight.
When nothing in your tray fits, the game asks whether to use a refresh or end the game. Once you are out of refreshes and stuck, the game ends and your score is added to your lifetime total on the ranks page.
Ten Tips From Long Games
- Keep the middle open. The 3 by 3 square and the five-long bars need room. Build from the edges and corners inward.
- Leave whole lanes, not holes. A single empty cell surrounded by blocks can only take a single block. Avoid creating them.
- Look at all three pieces first. The order matters. Place the awkward one while there is still space for it.
- Set up doubles. If two rows are one block short in the same column, one bar finishes both.
- Protect the chain. When a chain is running, prefer a small clear now over a bigger one two drops later.
- Grey pieces are a warning. A dimmed piece has no space on the board right now. Clear something before the tray is all grey.
- Watch the glow. Hover or drag over the board and the lines that would clear light up. Use it to test ideas without committing.
- Save refreshes for emergencies. Spending one on a merely awkward tray often leaves you with none when the board is nearly full.
- Empty boards pay. When only a few blocks are left, look for the drop that clears all of them for the 300-point bonus.
- Stop while you are ahead. The game keeps your board, so a break costs nothing. Fresh eyes find lines tired eyes miss.
Common Questions About the Rules
Do rows and columns clear at the same time?
Yes. A drop that completes a row and a column clears both, and counts as two lines. The block where they cross is cleared once.
Do new pieces depend on my board?
New pieces are drawn at random from 37 shapes. The only help: if none of the three would fit, one is swapped for a single block so a deal is never dead on arrival.
Is there a time limit or a move limit?
Neither. You can play one drop a day if you like. For more on keeping sessions short, read the healthy play page; for everything else, the FAQ.
